Japanese style food menus at canteens on campus

There are some canteens and restaurants on campus of HKUST. Most of them serves Chinese or Cantonese dishes. What I surprised was that I found not a few Japanese style menus at student canteens. I tried some of the dishes as the photos below show. As you may find out from the photos, they are localized for Hognkongners.

The upper left one is Japanese style Udon, which is quite different from the Japanese Udon. What’s wired the most is that they use ramen soup for this dish. In addition, some ingredients like mushrooms and cucumbers, which Japanese people would not put, are used. Although it was acceptable to me, I wondered why they didn’t serve Japanese udon as it is (the photo of this dish on the menu is a genuine Japanese Udon).

The upper right one is a kind of pork and fried fish bowl with miso soup. The bowl was good and I was surprised by the combination of ingredients. Also, The miso soup was the Japanese one as it is.

The left bottom one is port katlet and roasted port fillet bowl. I had a choice if I ordered rice or ramen, but I selected rice. The pork katlet was thinner and less juicy than a Japanese one.

Lastly, the right bottom one is steak and ham set. It was like a Japanese Western style meal. The beaf was juicy and went well with the sauce.
